“Closed Caskets: Tracks 1-4″ by JLD

cc-1-4-blog1

As I continue coverage on the mixtape Closed Caskets, I’ll take my personal favorites and give you guys my run down and thoughts, It’s available online here at oneofakindrecords.comso head over to the online store and grab that!!

Track 1 “0-100″ begins with “Bite the hand that feeds you and you just might starve/ got the guts to match your rap, you can get split like gars/ One Of A Kind ain’t a label, it’s persona like ours’”. That’s the first line of the cd and DAMN, Pirscription wasted no time getting the point across and Duce sets the tone with his clever and hot topic rap lines, “Make these hits like we ordered to take your life/ I’m not Mayweather I bet I could take you wife” The balance works from the get go as it reminds us of classic rap groups that have had different agendas but the same end goal.

Track 2 “Learn Somethin” has a great vibe and sticks to the script with a nice, braggadocio/punch line filled verse from Duce but the knowledge dropped by Script on this track stands out as he opens with “get off your ass and go get it, sitting still never earned nothing/ we can kick it like return punting” and then touches on hot topics such as Youth being informed voters, the legalization of Mary Jane and the possibility of it never happening, “a red state with a face lift sounds outrageous/ pigs might fly before Texans become legal weed tasters” is one that immediately became stuck in my head.

Track 3 “C4″ was the first one to have a catchy record feel, the hook holds it together and the verses hold up. The hook is really on point and can compete as one of the best and most catchiest on the tape. Duce takes more of a serious approach on his verse, touching on failed successes, the hate from other rappers and his opinion on major labels. Pirscription meanwhile speaks on his hometown, the plight of small town artist and damn near riddle like rhymes that made me text him and ask what the hell does that mean, so listen and see if you can decipher what he’s saying.

Track 4 “H.O.T.” is standard mixtape fare and will be some peoples favorite record, they flip the Bobby Shmurda, “Hot N” record and flex lyrical muscle, Duce uses a sped up flow while Script sticks to the basic and gives what you expect, perfect balance. The shout out to Texas was nice and the abandoning from the original flow was a nice surprise… not to mention the Willie Nelson sample.

That’s my rundown of the first 4 records but you need to listen and let me know what you think. So until next time just remember, everyone, sometime or another has to eat the shit sandwich.

Wake Up Wake Up, & #LegalizeIt !!

wakeup-wakeup-blog 2

Wake up wake up and put some facts in your brain.

Ok, here’s the deal, Script is going to Colorado for the Cannabis Cup (for the 2nd year straight … lucky bastard) and in honor of that I decided to drop some knowledge about the Marijuana industry. He also said something about maybe a video shoot/release while he is there, but that’s a story for another time… so stay tuned!

Now, I’m not one for propaganda pieces and trying to convince anyone I Just want to leave you with something to think about so here are some facts and numbers because we all know that men lie women lie but numbers don’t lie, HOVA.

Let’s start with what it cost State and Federal governments to run Marijuana Prohibition, according to Harvard University economist Jeffery Miron that figure is an estimated $17.4 billion. That number alone should cause concern and raise questions about the integrity of the entire operation especially when you consider that it’s fairly obvious that it hasn’t been successful. The investment company ArcView Market Research found that in 2013 the legal marijuana market is worth $1.53 billion, which is modest when you see that the same report found that it will reach $10.2 billion by 2020.

When looking for the possibility of Texas and others to join the list of Medical states, a lot of eyes have descended on Colorado as we all wait and see how the state does being one of the first to legalize Marijuana. So far it’s been a complete success in the financial sector of it. In the first 2 months of 2014 the state collected $6.17 million and went on to collect $98 million during the fiscal year of 2014 according to a recent budget proposal from Gov. John Hickenlooper there will be $40 million devoted to public school construction and an estimated 7,500-10,000 industry jobs that opened up in 2014

Colorado isn’t the only one benefitting, Washington state has projected that they will raise $190 million in taxes and fees, California’s medicinal dispensaries has an annual revenue of 105 million and Arizona’s marijuana market has an estimated value of $142.19 million. Maine has even got on board and will possibly be able to vote on it in 2016 after estimating that it could earn $36 million every year by legalizing and regulating marijuana, that is only a small portion of the states that have took a step in the direction of legalizing and regulating marijuana.

As we can see there is plenty of money to be made and with so many needs that need to be met from schools to after school programs, social security, research, etc. We have to take a serious look and be open minded, we have to erase some of the preconceived notions that exist about marijuana and go about it the right way so until we are free from the oppression of ignorance let’s respect the law and in the words of Nate Dogg…… “Smoke Weed Everyday”…. well, if its legal.

“Closed Caskets” is finally here!! (Get yours NOW!!)

cc-release-blog-pic

You swing and he moves before the punch lands,he jabs and you anticipate it-lean back to the right, it misses. This is where the saying Steel sharpens steel would be a perfect anecdote. The challenge that comes with competing against someone who knows you well and can anticipate your moves is that you have to swing harder, quicker and with more surprise. You have to switch it up, be more creative and most of all..you have to go harder.

That is what listening to Closed Caskets was like to me, it felt like two friends, label mates and fellow MC’s challenging each other. Closed Caskets is a collaborative effort between MC’s Pirscription and Duce D, both of One Of A Kind Records based in West, Texas. At first listen the first things that stick out is the choice of instrumentals, the vocal production and the focus on lyrics which work well to hold it all together.

A lot of times the problem that arises when 2 mc’s do a project together is the lack of cohesiveness and in this case it wasn’t a problem, a lot of that has to do with the fact that it doesn’t feel rushed, has a nice flow and with 21 songs will give you enough material to last.

So when you listen to this you will probably imagine 2 prizefighters fighting for respect, fighting into the final rounds and in this case it’s 21. So go ahead, push play and head into the fight and if you listen real close then you hear 2 friends who will be damn if one is outdone by the other

Messy hair. Tired eyes. Sore feet. Have you been at SXSW?

at sxsw blog pic copy

I’m writing this at my desk and to put it plainly, my hips hurt and my back hurts and I need a marathon sleep session…but not before I make a note of things I need to do next year to make it better.  Here is a list of some things I DID do.

I drunk some beer, mostly Fireman’s ale but also indulged on Shiner. Thanks, Yahoo for the FREE beer.

Ate Bar-B-Que at an underrated spot called Blue Ribbon.

Ate Fried Chicken at Gus’s and Enchiladas at Amaya’s,  both hit the spot.

Sang along to “Hey there, Delilah” and “Trap Queen” within a couple hours of each other.

Saw 3 Folk bands at obscure venues.

Hit a “No Flex Zone” while stuck in traffic with Rae Sremmurd

Saw Riff Raff tell a fan that he couldn’t take a pic because “I have to go eat, get them gains”

Didn’t come close to seeing Incubus……. at all….

Almost got to see Sam Hunt and Jackie Green, bummed about both.

Jarren Benton performed his ass off.

This past weekend had a different vibe, to me it felt a bit nostalgic and i’m sure the rain had a lot to do with the calmness of it all but none the less,  I enjoyed it.

Some of the parties and events that are never an option in recent years were an option this year, for instance the Yahoo party which is usually out of the question had great events this year that were able to be enjoyed. The Fader Fort was another event that was said to be less packed then in recent years or at least felt that way. The food was over priced and the drinks were too but just like any other year, free beer is an option if you look hard enough.

The women mostly looked uncomfortable, I met a couple gorgeous school teachers, met a gorgeous stripper (I’m guessing) from New Orleans and met an older lady at the Young Thug show that looked like Dr.Quinn the Medicine Woman and randomly asked me if I liked Goodie Mob, then told me how she had a friend that wore green jeans and loved the song “Greeny Green”. S/O to the girl in the red dress who spilled red wine all on the back of Script’s shirt & didn’t tell anybody, it made for a good laugh when we left the show, haha.

I will be on to another festival next month, in Florida, and will probably have more interesting stories but something about being in Austin and the energy of SXSW that keeps us coming back… oh yeah, the expensive food and uncomfortable looking woman don’t hurt.

“Where outcast and beatniks would socialize” by: JLD

ftworth-reviewt-slider copy

This past Saturday on March 14, We tried once again to bring Central Texas music to a bigger market. We succeeded.

The venue was The Cellar, a bar type set up with multiple rooms and a downstairs bar. It has a history of being a place where outcast and beatniks would socialize, play music and drink during the 70′s. The stage was in the center room and elevated about 2ft, it’s a very intimate set-up which makes up most of it’s charm. There were 2 murals that caught our attention and they consisted of historical music figures drawn together, like Elvis on the toilet and Janis Joplin setting next to Jimi Hendrix.

FTWORTH-SHOW-PICWWSome (But not all) of us, making a pit-stop on the way to the venue. lol #PreGame

We got there for sound check and still had time to kill, the venue is located right in the middle of TCU with many food choices, I had to introduce the Waco boy’s to Fuzzy’s Taco (Told you Jay, Gibbie, and T). We got back to the spot and started enjoying some beverages. It was a fun night and I even got to meet Steven Watkins of DFW.com who was there to capture the evening, here is the link to that! >> http://www.dfw.com/2015/03/16/978164/concert-review-sxsw-kickoff-party.html

Thanks to Callie Dee and The Gitmo fam, yall got some talent and I look forward to working with y’all.

The next week will be crazy for us as we head to Austin for my official showcase (http://schedule.sxsw.com/2015/events/event_MS30229), we will have some great articles, recaps and stories, so look forward to what is coming and thanks for riding with us. PEACE.

“I witnessed a murder this past Friday.” by JLD.

0-100 - blog pic

As we gather here today to mourn the loss of some wack MC’s, we shall take time to say thank you to the ones not bending and folding, lying and pretending, or living a make believe life that will be revealed as a facade, AND THAT DAY IS HERE!!….. Well…… almost!

Untill then, here is the first visual release from “Closed Caskets”, an OOAK revamp of “0-100″.

Trash, could be defined as unwanted, nasty, no good or un-useable items and in this video the two rappers are seen literally taking the trash out. Is that an underlying narrative?

After watching “0-100″, a surprise video release from OOAK last Friday, it is in my opinion, a metaphorical view of how almost all of us feel about the current state of hip-hop.

The album planned for a Beyoncé style release some time between now and SXSW, I myself have been anticipating the record for a while now (I told Script he’s bullsh*tting) but, I now have confirmation that it is done and about to be pressed.

I want to encourage everyone to check out this video and see how you perceive it. Peace, I’m out.

no limit forever flyer-500

This Friday OOAK‘s Junior will be celebrating his 21st birthday along with the rest of the team in Killeen, Tx at the Int’l Sports Bar. The night will also be hosting The New No Limit Forever showcase with A&R Dolla Bill and DJ ADeezy in the mix. Normally we don’t partake in these type of “Contest” events, but with Junior turning 21, and nothing else on the schedule this weekend, we figured WHY NOT?!?! I personally couldn’t think of any place better to celebrate your 21st birthday, then rocking the stage gone off free birthday shots, & shutting the place down in the process!!

Fresh off his debut mixtape release (A.I.D.S.) Junior will be showcasing some of the featured songs, as well a couple new, previously unreleased, tracks he has been working on.

Come out and help celebrate Juniors birthday, get you a copy of A.I.D.S. (if you don’t allready have one), & have a good time; we know we will!! Hope to see you there!!

Shows & Events: “SXSW KICK-OFF” in Ft Worth, Tx

On March 14th something is gonna happen at the cellar in Fort Worth,Texas.

callie-dee-500-flyer

It will be an exciting night with artist from Central Texas linking up with artist from Ft. Worth and Dallas to cause chaos.

Fort Worth’s own Callie Dee and Right Round Productions, along with North Texas’ Gitmo Music, are putting this together and the plan is to have a (FREE) hip-hop filled night to celebrate and thank everyone for the support in helping us make SXSW. The OOAK family and myself will head up I-35 with no intentions on letting anyone down, it’s always good to come back to a place that has showed so much love. I’m ready show off this new show that we’ve been working on, it’s different than in the past and I’m excited to see the reaction, we took a more musical approach, while there will still be times where everyone loses their minds, there will also be time to just enjoy the vibe and music….. FOR FREE!!!

The OOAK team will be joined by the usual suspects Pirscription and Duce D,  who always bring a high energy and lyrical aspect to their show, and this one will be no different. This time however, Script and Duce are previewing some new songs as they start gearing up for the release of their collaborative mixtape Closed Caskets. Along with the aforementioned there will also be some great talent from the metroplex like Illizem, Jah Tree, Naomi, D’Labrie, Lo, and Duke; with the DJ of the night being DJ Orbt. Oh, and did i mention that the show was FREE?!!?

We hope to see you there, whether it be to support myself (JLD), Pirscription, Duce D, the Ft Worth acts, or just to have a good time. Either way, we look forward to the trip, and hope to see you ALL there… excpecially since its FREE!! .. lol

SXSW 2015… Are you ready?

sxsw-blogpic

Every March, musicians do whatever they have to do to find a way to Austin,Tx for what is billed as the largest Music festival of its kind, South by Southwest.

What started in 1987 as a local attraction has now become the place to be if you are a musician or have anything to do with music for that matter. In the past years we have done whatever it takes to take advantage of the close to home festival, and have done everything from sleep in cars and pack 10 deep in hotel rooms, to renting a 2 story house for the entire week of SX!

sxsw collage pic

Collage of pictures from past SXSW trips, 2013, 2014

This year, again, OOAK and JLD will be making the trek down I-35 to be apart of the festivities and I’ve personally noticed the exponential growth of the event which comes with it’s pros and cons. When I was there in 2009 I felt like it had a very laid back artist friendly vibe and the artist were able to hang out and mingle or do freestyle cyphers a lot more freely, but, as with anything, growth has it’s advantages and disadvantages. Attendance hasn’t been hampered, neither has the slew of artist that head to SXSW every year. This year there are rumored to be less “un-official” events and stricter restrictions on events overall, and everybody is waiting to see if it kills the vibe that SXSW has created, or if we will like it even more than the previous years. But either way, lets be honest, how do you put alcohol, pretty women, great music, street tacos and Austin together and not expect it to be an amazing time?

As we get closer to SXSW we will be focusing on different aspects of the event, peoples stories, food and information on events we think are interesting.
